Scarborough Jazz Festival 2019
20-22 September 2019
The 17th Scarborough Jazz Festival will take place between 20-22 September 2019 at Scarborough Spa and has the usual exciting mix of well-established performers (but still moving forwards) and younger up-and-coming groups.
Each of the three evenings finish with powerful ensembles: Jeremy Sassoon’s ‘Ray Charles’ Project; Jim Mullen’s
nine-piece ‘Volunteers’ with arrangements by flautist Gareth Lockrane; and Alan Barnes + 11
(celebrating Alan’s 60th) with arrangements by trombonist Mark Nightingale.
There are some amazing young players:
, a band selected by Jazz North, use new technology to combine jazz and hip hop.
Reeds player Sam Rapley’s ‘Fabled’ interprets a collection of short stories tackling subjects such as life, love and death through richly atmospheric and expressive music.
Claire Martin said of six-piece Bonsai:
‘Their ability to connect with the audience was exceptional … This band are bound for great things. A joy!’
Veteran Clark Tracey,
voted Best Drummer in the British Jazz Awards 2017 and 2018, leads an exciting and spirited quintet of gifted young musicians. Similarly, renowned pianist John Law
has put together a stunning new group of young performers.
Add to the mix the Freddie Gavita Quartet, Tony Kofi and the Organisation, Alec Dankworth’s ‘Spanish Accents’, Andrea Vicari’s New Jazz Extempore, Partisans, Wild Card
led by guitarist Clement Regert, solo performances from pianist Dave Newton
and vocalist and pianist Liane Carroll
, and the 18-piece band led by the superb vocalist Kate Peters
– and you have a high quality jazz weekend with never a dull moment.
All this and a host of FREE fringe events takes place over the weekend of 20 – 22 September 2019 in the Victorian Spa Grand Hall looking out over the sea and sand towards Scarborough castle on the cliff top.
